Afternoon Thunder

By now you probably know the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season formed a few days ago off the east coast. It is Alberto and it will likely stay safely in the western Atlantic. The official start of the hurricane season is June 1 but it's not unusual to get a storm before or after the season. Researcher Chris Landsea of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory says the earliest known Atlantic hurricane on record was on March 7 of 1908.

We've got no tropical troubles here but we do have a summertime pattern. Temperatures are just a little above average but high enough to trigger scattered strong thunderstorms this afternoon. Highs tomorrow will reach 90, except in the few spots that get the rain and gusts. Any strong or severe thunderstorm could produce isolated wind damage with high gusts or a microburst but that's almost a given for any storms that flare up in the heat of the day.

Thunderstorms will diminish this evening but a few may linger through the night. Fog is likely where the downpours occured earlier. Rain chances will be lower midweek, with more sunshine. Highs will stay warm, close to 90. Nighttime lows will be just about average in the middle 60s.
